Starting from the 19th Century debates on the liberty of the ancients, Marx develops a new political model for the future. Lenin as well, when imaging the soviets as the core of the new communist state, has in mind some aspects of ancient democracy. Carlo Marcaccini draws on his extensive knowledge of both classical and contemporary sources to look at how both Marx and Lenin’s theories were inspired by classical democracy, turning Athens into a new revolutionary paradigm.
